When Life Feels Like the Wilderness: First Steps

When Life Feels Like a Wilderness: How to Take the First Step

There are seasons in life that feel like wilderness—unfamiliar, overwhelming, and full of uncertainty. Divorce, loss, illness, or major transitions can leave us standing at a crossroads, unsure which way to go. In those moments, the temptation is to search for the entire map: Where will this lead? How long will it last? What will my life look like on the other side?

But the truth is, you don’t need the whole map. You only need the next right step.

Why the Next Step Matters

When we try to solve everything at once, the weight becomes unbearable. But when we narrow our focus to what can be done today, we find strength we didn’t know we had. Each small step creates momentum, and momentum creates hope.

Here are three practices to help you take that first step when life feels overwhelming:

1. Pause and Breathe

Before you move forward, allow yourself to wait. Take three deep breaths. Notice your body. Notice your surroundings. Remind yourself: I don’t need to solve everything right now. I only need to be here, in this moment. Ask yourself: What do I need right now, to slow down?

  • Try a short, 10 minute, physical activity: step outside, take a walk, feel your feet on the ground, and take five slow breaths as you go. This anchors you when your thoughts want to run ahead. Being outside is the interruption your body needs to slow down.

2. Ask One Clarifying Question

Instead of trying to answer every question, choose one small, clarifying one:

  • What do I need most today?

  • What is one thing within my control right now?

  • If I could only do one thing, what would matter most?

Writing down your answer helps untangle the chaos in your head and bring clarity you did not have before.

3. Take the Smallest Possible Action

Big change begins with small actions. Maybe that means making one phone call, writing one sentence, or setting aside ten minutes to rest. It doesn’t have to be dramatic. It only has to be doable. Small actions compound over time, leading you out of the wilderness one step at a time.

Closing Thought

If you feel lost right now, remember: you don’t have to see the whole path. You only need enough clarity to take one step. Then another. And another.

The wilderness may feel endless, but it’s not forever. With each small step, you are moving forward—toward healing, toward hope, and toward a new chapter of your story.
